Measurement fixes

Fix tracking that double counts or misses conversions

Duplicate tags, broken thank-you pages and missing events are common. A partner can audit what you have and quote the cleanup.

The pieces of a tracking setup

A typical lead tracking setup for a small or mid-sized business includes these parts:

  • Google Tag Manager as the single place tags are added and changed
  • GA4 events for form submissions and other actions you care about
  • Conversion tags for Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Meta, LinkedIn or whichever platforms you use
  • UTM naming rules so every campaign link is labeled the same way
  • Hidden form fields that carry campaign details into the CRM
  • Lead routing into HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive or similar
  • Speed-to-lead alerts by email, Slack or app notification
  • Offline conversion import that sends CRM stages back to the ad platforms
  • A simple report the owner can read

A report the owner can read

Many tracking projects end with a dashboard full of charts nobody opens. A better finish is a short report that answers the questions an owner actually asks.

  • How many form submissions came in, by campaign and by platform?
  • How many became booked meetings or sales conversations?
  • How many became deals?
  • What did each campaign spend in the same period?
  • Which leads have no source recorded, and why?

This can live in Looker Studio, in the CRM's own reports, or in a shared spreadsheet updated on a schedule. The format matters less than consistency: the same measures, defined the same way, each period. A few plain notes on what changed in the accounts that month make the numbers easier to read.

Access to grant, and how

Tracking work touches several accounts, so plan access carefully.

Add the provider as a user in each tool, using their own login. Google Tag Manager, GA4, Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Meta Business Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager and the major CRMs all support this. Give each user the level the work needs: publish rights in Tag Manager, editor rights in GA4, and integration or admin rights in the CRM if connectors must be set up.

Avoid sharing your own password, even temporarily. Added users can be removed when work ends, and every change they make is logged under their name. Keep a short list of who has access to what. CISA publishes general guidance on account security that applies here too.

Questions about lead tracking and follow-up

What is an offline conversion import?

It sends outcomes recorded in your CRM, such as a booked meeting or a won deal, back to an ad platform and matches them to the original click. The platform then knows which ads led to sales conversations, not only form fills. How it uses that information is up to the platform.

Why do GA4 and my ad platform show different numbers?

Each tool counts by its own rules. They differ in attribution windows, how they treat returning visitors and what ad blockers stop. Some gap is normal. The aim is to keep each source consistent over time and to make sure a single submission is not counted twice within any one tool.

What are UTM parameters?

They are labels added to a link that name the source, medium and campaign. GA4 reads them to report where visitors came from, and hidden form fields can save them with each lead in your CRM. A shared naming sheet keeps them consistent across campaigns.

If your ads, pages or follow-up need attention, describe the problem and get a scoped quote.
